Journalist and native of the meat Country Brazil, Fernanda Capobianco previously managed and owned The Payard Restaurant and Pastry shops in Rio de Janeiro. Fernanda (a vegan of 15+ years) developed unique recipes for delicious pastries and mousses free of eggs and sugar. Instead, Fernanda opted to use healthier all-natural organic & fresh ingredients: Exotic fruits such as passion fruit, açai, and cupuaçu. Soon Fernanda expanded her knowledge and expertise into creating hearty and healthy all-vegan sandwiches.
When she moved to NY in 2009, Capobianco became an active board member of New York Coalition of Healthy School Foods, a statewide non-profit organization that delivers healthy meals to the students at the NYC public schools. Going frequently to the schools where chicken nuggets and burgers were served in the daily basis to the kids, Fernanda who lost her dad with diabetes in her young age, realized a health crisis:
-50% of children between the ages of 2-15 have fatty streaks in their arteries, literally the beginning stages of heart disease.
-35% of children born in 2000 will develop type 2 diabetes at some point of their lives. For African American and Latinos, the numbers frightening 40-53%. These means more blindness, amputations, kidney dialysis, heart disease, poor quality of life, and early death.
-35% of all cancer deaths are caused by diet.
In 2012 Capobianco founded Vegan Divas, an upscale vegan, animal free, non cholesterol, organic, kosher and parve, low calories and delicious line of baked goods and desserts. She had a clear goal from the beginning: "It has been my dream to create gourmet pastries with the quality, taste and presentation similar to those offered by the best gourmet bakeries but as healthy baked goods,” she said. "These days you don't need to be hippie to be healthy anymore!", Fernanda affirmed.
The Vegan Divas Flagship store in the Upper East Side is where health conscious moms order cakes and pastries for their kids and also celebrities get their treats.
Capobianco caters to the Clinton Family and The Clinton Foundation and recently made the cakes for Anne Hatthaway at the set of the movie "The Intern".
The products are available in the best grocery stores in NY and are also shipped across the Country through the E-commerce website www.vegandivasnyc.com
