Gardening is a great hobby to take up; it gets you outside, burning calories, and produces rewarding results. Whether you’re looking to grow some delicious produce or beautiful flowers, these 9 tips and tricks for beginners will get you started off on the right foot!
Growing food is commonly oversimplified, and many people start without a strategy or a realistic idea of the time and money that’s required. Some suffer through season after season of disappointing results, while others get disillusioned and quit gardening altogether. Thankfully, whether you retired your gardening gloves after one season or you’re seeking a better outcome, there are many ways to improve.
Instead of chemical fertilizers, which are often associated with health risks, you can make compost or homemade fertilizers from kitchen scraps, leaves, cardboard boxes, and manure, and you can make your mulch from simple items like leaves and grass clippings. Mulch is a helpful material that should be placed on top of the ground in a ring around your plants, several inches away from the plant’s body. Mulch has numerous functions, such as reducing fluctuations of soil temperature, preventing soil compaction, and smothering weeds.
Make your garden 11 rows wide, with each row 10 feet long. The rows should run north and south to take full advantage of the sun.
Soil problems include elevated levels of heavy metals, such as aluminum, which can be toxic to plants. Or, soil may have inadequate nutrients, such as phosphorus. According to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, phosphorus deficiency can result in stunted plant growth.
Many plants, such as lettuce and sunflowers, are easy to grow from seed directly in the garden. Be sure to read the seed packet for information about planting time, depth, and spacing. If you’re an adventurous beginner, get a head start on the growing season by sowing seeds indoors a few weeks before the last frost date. There are containers or flats designed especially for seedlings and seed-starting soil mixes available at garden centers. Follow seed-packet instructions and place the containers on a sunny windowsill or under grow lights if you don’t have window space. Be sure to keep the seeds and seedlings moist but not wet, or they may rot.
