”If you’re not comfortable with a designer, there’s a reason,” says John Petrie, a CMKBD and NKBA member in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. ”You can’t sugarcoat the process. We are going to come into your home and we are going to disrupt your lifestyle for the next so many weeks. If everybody is honest and comfortable, it minimizes problems.”
Before you choose a kitchen designer, make as many general design decisions as possible. Setting clear goals, even if you can’t envision them in final form, will improve communication with your designer, and designers’ responses to your goals may determine your final choice of the professional whom you hire. General goals can include more light, an eating area, deeper counter space, a separate sink for produce and flower arranging, a baking area and home office space. Making a list before you choose a designer helps you clarify how you want your kitchen to function once the work is completed and helps a designer create a responsive overall plan. Decisions like blue vs. brown tiles will come later, but a complete list is key to creating a master design plan.
“If space permits, an island becomes an added benefit of storage and function,” says Vayo.
Yet the key word is space. The minimum recommended size for an island is 40 square inches, plus a clearance zone of 31.5 inches. Don’t have the square footage to accommodate that? Choose a less supersized option.
To maximize your storage capacity in this streamlined design, invest in a wall-mounted rail system where you can hang pots, knives, and other items you want to keep within reach, Vayo suggests.
She suggests that the sink, prep counter, and stove be grouped together, with an optimal run for the prep counter a minimum of 42 inches. ”I think you can get too far away, too,” she says, cautioning that eight feet of counter between sink and stove is probably too much.
